They Were Showing You From Birth
Most newborn sleep advice starts with a routine.
This guide starts with your baby.
You've barely had time to get to know your baby and already there's a list of things you're apparently meant to be doing.
The list you're handed
- ♡Get them into a routine.
- ♡Watch the wake windows.
- ♡Don't create “bad habits”.
- ♡Start as you mean to go on.
Blah, blah bloody blah.
And before long, you can find yourself watching the clock, second-guessing every feed and wondering whether the thing that settles your baby today is somehow going to cause a problem tomorrow.
But newborn sleep doesn't fit neatly into a timetable
- ♡Waking often.
- ♡Feeding often.
- ♡Wanting to be held.
- ♡Sleeping noisily.
- ♡Mixing up day and night.
- ♡Needing more help to settle some days than others.
There are reasons for all of it.
And when you understand what's happening underneath the sleep, it becomes much easier to work out what your baby might need, and what you can stop worrying about.
That's what They Were Showing You From Birth is here to help you do.
Understand the baby in front of you
Not just another routine to follow.
This guide takes you from the first newborn days, through the fourth trimester and into the sleep shift around four months, with clear explanations instead of more rules.
The aim isn't to give you more rules. It's to help you feel more confident reading your own baby.
What you'll find inside
This is the stuff I want you to know before you find yourself Googling at 3am wondering whether everyone else got a manual you somehow missed.
You don't need to remember all of it. You just need somewhere reliable to come back to when something changes, your baby does something new, or Google has given you seventeen different answers before breakfast.
Why I wrote it
I'm Catherine, The Parent Rock.
I've spent years helping exhausted parents make sense of what their babies are doing and why.
And so often, they don't need another thing to get right.
They need someone to explain what's actually happening, what might help, and when something is simply part of the stage their baby is in.
That's why I wrote this guide.
I want you to have something solid to come back to when your baby suddenly feeds constantly, won't be put down, starts sleeping differently, or everyone around you has an opinion about what you ought to be doing.
You don't need to become an expert in baby sleep. You just need enough understanding to feel more confident with the baby you actually have.
This will be particularly useful if…
You're pregnant
and want to know what newborn sleep actually looks like before you're living it at 3am.
You've got a newborn
and keep wondering whether all the waking, feeding, grunting, contact naps and unpredictable stretches are normal.
You're nearing four months
and want to understand the change everyone keeps warning you about before you're in the middle of it.
If you'd rather understand the why than blindly follow another set of instructions, this guide was written for you.
A few things you might be wondering
QIs this a sleep schedule?
No, quite deliberately. The guide explains why newborn sleep doesn't fit neatly into a timetable and helps you understand your baby's cues, sleep biology and needs instead.
QIs it just for breastfeeding families?
No. Breastfeeding, bottle feeding and combination feeding are all included. The guide looks at how feeding and sleep fit together whichever way your baby is fed.
QWhen is it most useful?
You can read it before your baby arrives, come back to it throughout the newborn weeks, and keep using it as you move towards and through the four-month sleep shift.
QDoes it cover the four-month "regression"?
Yes, although I call it the four-month shift. You'll learn what's changing in your baby's sleep, what those weeks can actually feel like, and why the change isn't simply your baby going backwards.
QWhat if I'm worried something needs more than reassurance?
The guide also helps you recognise when something may need a closer look, so you're not left wondering whether to wait it out or ask for extra support. It doesn't replace individual medical advice, and where professional help may be needed, I'll say so.
QWhat do I receive?

In the turn of their head. The change in their cry. The way their movements slow when they're ready for rest. The things that calm them, and the things that don't.
This guide helps you understand the language.
